Microsoft is stepping up its game in file-sharing by introducing an AirDrop-like feature for Windows 10 and 11, targeting Android users. This new capability, accessible through the Phone Link app, allows seamless file transfers between PCs and Android devices, mirroring the convenience that Apple users enjoy with AirDrop. This development is part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to bridge the gap in functionality between its operating system and macOS.
The feature is currently in its testing phase within the Release Preview Channel, indicating that it could soon be available to a wider audience. To use this feature, both devices need to meet certain criteria: Windows 10 must have the May 2019 update or later, and the Android device should be running Android 9.0 or higher. The Phone Link app on the PC must also be updated to version 1.24032.156.0 or later, and the Android device should have the Link to Windows app version 1.24032.518.0 or later installed.
Once the devices are synced, transferring files is as simple as right-clicking the desired file on the PC, selecting the “Share” option, and choosing Phone Link. The file will then be sent to the connected Android device without the need for additional permissions, thanks to the pre-established synchronization.
This new feature is not just about catching up to Apple; it’s about enhancing the overall user experience for Windows and Android users by providing more integrated and efficient tools for everyday tasks. While it currently focuses on file sharing, it may expand to include other functionalities that further integrate mobile and desktop experiences.
As Microsoft continues to refine this feature, it aims to streamline workflows and make cross-device usage more intuitive, especially for those who rely on both Windows PCs and Android devices. This update marks a significant step forward in Microsoft’s strategy to offer competitive alternatives to Apple’s ecosystem, particularly in areas where Windows has previously lagged behind(
